PhD Studentship in Physical Chemistry (Physics & Chemistry)

PhD studentship in Physical Chemistry at Swansea University, based in the Surface Dynamics Laboratory at Singleton Campus, United Kingdom. This funded project is led by Dr Christopher Baker, with Prof. G. Alexandrowicz as supervisor, and is supported by a Leverhulme Trust Research Leadership Award. The research sits at the intersection of physics and chemistry and focuses on the application of the spin echo principle to investigate the effect of gravity on antimatter. The successful PhD candidate will join a multidisciplinary team and work alongside other research groups within the Surface Dynamics Laboratory. The project combines numerical and experimental research to explore existing techniques such as spin echo, magnetic guidance, and surface scattering, while also developing new methods to study the acceleration due to Earth’s gravity on antimatter. This is a full-time PhD opportunity aligned with the Chemistry PhD programme. The scholarship covers full tuition fees and an annual stipend at the UKRI rate of £21,805 for 2026/27. It is open only to applicants eligible to pay tuition fees at the UK rate. The funding is available from October 2026 onwards, with a project start date in January 2027 and a possible deferral of up to three months in exceptional circumstances. Applicants should hold at least a UK 2:1 undergraduate degree or a master’s degree with Merit (or an equivalent international qualification). English language evidence is required, typically IELTS 6.0 overall with no component below 5.5, or Swansea University recognised equivalent. Some candidates may require ATAS clearance after receiving an offer. The application deadline is 13 October 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/London). Interested candidates should apply through the Swansea University scholarship webpage and review the full funding and eligibility details before submitting an application.
