PhD opportunity at Ghent University, Belgium in autism research, social cognition, psychology, and neuroscience. This 4-year doctoral position is part of the FWO-funded project “Mind the Mind: Testing the Mind-Space Theory in Autism” . The project is led by Prof. Dr. Roeljan Wiersema and Dr. Annabel Nijhof from the EXPLORA research group at Ghent University, in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Geoff Bird at University College London. The research investigates social difficulties in autism using two complementary frameworks: the Mind-Space theory and the Double Empathy theory. The work will involve behavioral experiments and EEG hyperscanning with autistic and non-autistic adults, contributing to theoretical understanding of autism, social interaction, and social cognition. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Psychology or another relevant Master’s degree. Students who will graduate in July 2026 may also apply, provided they can guarantee graduation by 1 October 2026. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in autism research, good academic results, programming experience, strong English skills, and preferably some Dutch for participant contact. EEG experience is welcome but not required. The position is full-time and initially funded for 12 months, with extension possible up to 48 months after positive evaluation. The fellowship is described as 100% of the net salary of an AAP member in equal family circumstances, and the grant is tax-free if it meets the doctoral fellowship regulations.
