Post-doc in Bio- and Nano-Instrumentation for Cryogenic Scanning Probe Microscopy and Quantum Measurements

EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher / scientific collaborator for the Laboratory for Bio- and Nano-Instrumentation in Lausanne, Switzerland. The project focuses on advanced nanoscale measurement technologies for nanoscience, materials science, and life science , with a specific emphasis on developing next-generation MEMS probes and instrumentation for cryogenic scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and quantum measurements . The position is part of a recently funded project on multifunctional self-sensing probe technologies for experiments on quantum materials under cryogenic and vacuum conditions. The successful candidate will work at the interface of MEMS microfabrication , scanning probe instrumentation , and cryogenic measurement technology . Typical tasks include design, fabrication, and characterization of advanced MEMS probes; development of wafer-scale micro- and nanofabrication processes; mechanical, electrical, and thermal characterization under vacuum and cryogenic conditions; integration and testing in scanning probe instrumentation; collaboration with academic and industrial partners; and publication, student supervision, and technology transfer activities. Applicants should hold a PhD in microengineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, materials science, or a closely related field. Strong hands-on MEMS or micro/nanofabrication experience is required, together with cleanroom skills such as photolithography, thin-film deposition, plasma or wet etching, metallization, wafer bonding, or thin-film patterning. Experience with device design and characterization is expected, and background in AFM/STM, piezoelectric/resistive MEMS, low-noise electrical measurements, or vacuum/cryogenic instrumentation is highly relevant. Excellent English communication and independent problem-solving are important; quantum materials experience is a plus. The appointment is full-time (100%), with a 1-year contract renewable . EPFL offers a stimulating international environment, access to state-of-the-art micro/nanofabrication and characterization facilities, and competitive salary and working conditions. How to apply: submit applications only through the online platform. Provide a brief cover letter (PDF, up to 2 pages), plus one PDF containing your CV with publication list and contact details of 3 references.
