PhD in Modeling and Control of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems from Data at ETH Zurich

ETH Zurich is advertising two PhD positions in Modeling and Control of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems from Data at the Chair in Nonlinear Dynamics . The project focuses on developing and applying nonlinear dynamical systems methods for complex physical problems known only from data, with an emphasis on creating efficient, theoretically sound, fast, and directly interpretable alternatives to black-box neural network approaches. Research directions include spectral submanifold (SSM) methods , nonlinear model reduction, and the development of nonlinear modelling and control approaches for fluid-structure interactions , materials with memory , soft robotics , tele-operated systems , lightweight space structures , and turbulent flows . The position may be based in either the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering or the Department of Mathematics, depending on the candidate’s background and preferences. Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, or a related field. Strong mathematical skills are required, ideally demonstrated by high grades. Prior research experience in fluid mechanics, structural vibrations, model reduction, or control is expected, and experience with nonlinear dynamical systems methods and data-driven analysis is considered an advantage. Application materials: CV, Bachelor’s and Master’s transcripts, and contact information for at least two references. Applications must be submitted online through the ETH Zurich portal; email or postal applications are not accepted. Questions about the position should be directed to Prof. George Haller at [email protected]. Funding: the post is a 100% PhD position at ETH Zurich. No specific stipend amount or tuition details are stated in the post. Institution: ETH Zurich, Switzerland.
