Postdoctoral Researcher in Neural Interfaces for Hearing Restoration

Postdoctoral Researcher in Neural Interfaces for Hearing Restoration at Ghent University , Belgium. This postdoctoral position is embedded in the Neural Waves Laboratory within the Department of Information Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. The successful candidate will work on the ERC Starting Grant aTONE (AudiTOry Neuro-Electronics) , contributing to the development and evaluation of next-generation neural interfaces for hearing restoration . The research combines auditory neuroscience , flexible bioelectronics , optogenetics , and advanced cochlear neurotechnology . The appointed researcher will lead the laboratory’s in vivo auditory neuroscience work and help advance translational strategies for recording, processing, and modulating neural activity in the auditory system. The role includes rodent model development, microsurgical procedures, electrophysiological recordings, optogenetic stimulation, viral vector delivery, histology, microscopy, data analysis, and publication of results in leading international journals. This is a research-intensive appointment, with at least 70% of the time dedicated to academic research . The position also involves co-supervision of PhD and Master’s students, and contributions to grant proposals and collaborative research projects. Applicants should have a thesis-based PhD obtained no more than 6 years ago and a background in neuroscience, auditory neuroscience, neurobiology, biomedical engineering, neurotology, otology, hearing science, biomedical sciences, or a closely related field. Strong hands-on experience in in vivo research, stereotaxic surgery, electrophysiology, scientific writing, and independent research leadership is expected. Experience in auditory neuroscience, cochlear physiology, cochlear implant research, hearing restoration, neuroprosthetics, optogenetics, AAV delivery, gene therapy, histology, confocal microscopy, MATLAB/Python, and multidisciplinary engineering environments is highly valued. The position is funded through the ERC Starting Grant and is offered on a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 2 years , with possible extension depending on performance. The earliest start date is 1 September 2026 . Salary will be determined according to PD1 scale.
