Doctoral Scholarship in Medical Communication and Psychology (CircBioCare Project)

The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship in Medical Communication and Psychology, embedded within the CircBioCare project. This opportunity is situated in the Department of Communication Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, and is part of the Media & ICT in Organisations & Society (MIOS) research group. MIOS is renowned for its interdisciplinary research on media and digital technologies in interpersonal and organizational communication, focusing on evidence-based strategies and policy. The CircBioCare project aims to develop and implement AI-informed early detection tools for knee osteoarthritis, a major cause of disability worldwide. The doctoral research will investigate how innovative medical testing, specifically AI-based early detection, can be effectively communicated to societal stakeholders to promote acceptance and uptake. The project combines medical science, psychology, and communication studies, offering a unique multidisciplinary research environment. As a doctoral researcher, you will actively prepare and defend a PhD thesis, publish scientific articles, and present your findings at national and international conferences. You will also support teaching activities related to your research topic. The position offers access to a broad research network, including occasional collaboration with Maastricht University’s Faculty of Health, Medicine, and Life Science, Department of Rheumatology. Applicants must hold or expect to obtain a Master Degree in Communication Sciences, Medical Psychology, Health Sciences, or related fields by the start date. Strong qualitative and quantitative research skills are required, along with excellent Dutch and English language proficiency. Candidates should demonstrate integrity, creativity, cooperation, and a result-oriented attitude, aligning with the university’s research and educational vision. The scholarship is initially awarded for one year, with the possibility of extension up to four years following positive evaluation. The monthly scholarship amount is determined by university rates. Additional benefits include ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs, and access to a wide range of courses and educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School. The main workplace is the city campus in downtown Antwerp, offering a dynamic and stimulating environment. The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, encouraging applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The institution holds the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award and invests in the growth and well-being of its employees. Applications must be submitted online by April 23, 2026. Required documents include a motivation letter, academic CV, and transcript of records. Selection interviews will take place in early May, with options for online participation.
