Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), through the Brussels Photonics (B-PHOT) research group in the Faculty of Engineering, is offering a PhD position with a doctoral grant in
first-time-right design tools for multi-optics imaging systems
. The project is part of the
HARMONY_SBO
strategic basic research initiative, funded by Flanders Make, and focuses on developing compact, cost-effective, and robust imaging concepts for demanding or harsh-condition vision applications.
The research addresses key limitations in current optical vision systems, including restricted spectral range, limited dynamic range, and limited polarization diversity. The PhD work will contribute to the design of multi-optics imaging systems that combine multiple optical channels onto a single sensor, with the goal of creating a flexible toolbox and methodology for building broadband, high-dynamic-range, and multi-polarization optical modules. These systems will be validated in applications such as product inspection and navigation.
The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary environment alongside optical engineers, system engineers, and AI researchers. A key aspect of the project is the interaction with an AI-based image and video processing pipeline tailored to these novel multi-optics systems. The position offers access to simulation tools, design software, and prototyping infrastructure, supporting research from modelling and design through to validation.
B-PHOT is a large and internationally recognized photonics group at VUB, chaired by Prof. H. Thienpont, with expertise spanning freeform-optics-based design, modelling, fabrication, characterization, and proof-of-concept demonstration. This PhD therefore offers an opportunity to contribute to advanced photonics research in a multidisciplinary and industry-relevant setting.
The position is full-time and initially funded for 12 months, with the possibility of extension up to 48 months subject to positive evaluation. The planned starting date is 1 November 2026, and the application deadline is 23 September 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Brussels).
Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, or a related scientific field. Required skills include knowledge of photonics and optical design, numerical methods and ray tracing, strong English communication skills, and a willingness to work independently and collaboratively. Experience with programming, Python, AI tools, opto-mechanics, polarization filtering, spectral filtering, or CAD/CAE is advantageous.
