Fully Funded PhD in Nonlinear Dynamics and Vibration Attenuation for Rotary Steerable Tools at Swansea University

Fully funded PhD opportunity at Swansea University in Mechanical Engineering , focused on Nonlinear Dynamics and Vibration Attenuation for shock and vibration mitigation in rotary steerable tools (RS976). The project is industry-linked and developed with D-Tech (UK) Ltd , with applications in geothermal energy and downhole systems. The research combines modelling , simulation , experimental testing , and industrial collaboration. A key part of the work is the design and optimisation of passive mitigation solutions, including elastomer-based components, to improve reliability and lifespan under harsh operating conditions. The scholarship is open to UK and international applicants . Applicants should normally hold a 2.1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in Engineering or a closely related science discipline. English language requirement is IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 5.5 in each component , or Swansea University recognised equivalent. Some applicants may require ATAS clearance , but this is not needed at the application stage. Funding includes full tuition fees , an annual UKRI stipend (£20,780 for 2025/26; £21,805 for 2026/27 from October 2026 onwards), and up to £1,000 per year in additional research expenses. International applicants may also be considered for SUIPRES , which offsets the difference between international and home tuition fees so the successful candidate pays the UK rate. Deadline: 6 July 2026. Start date: October 2026. Location: Swansea University, Bay Campus. To apply, complete the online application form, enter RS976 in the programme-related information section, follow the scholarship-specific instructions in the research and funding sections, upload the advert, and include all required documents and the mandatory EDI form.
