PhD/Junior Researcher

PostDoc/Senior Researcher
position in the
Information Service Engineering
department, specifically in the
Knowledge Graph
team. The role is connected to the
Platform MaterialDigital III (PMD III)
project and focuses on
ontologies
,
ontology design
,
ontological engineering
,
knowledge graphs
,
semantic technologies
,
knowledge extraction
, and related AI methods.
The research environment combines
semantic web standards
,
NLP
,
machine learning
, and
symbolic knowledge representation
(neurosymbolic AI). Application areas include
materials science engineering
, as well as cultural heritage, digital humanities, research data management, semantic annotation, exploratory search, recommender systems, and question answering.
Eligibility:
applicants should have a very good Master’s degree for the PhD track or a PhD for the PostDoc track in computer science or a comparable discipline. Strong software engineering skills are required. Excellent English is expected; German is helpful but not mandatory. For PostDocs, publications in peer-reviewed international journals/conferences are expected, and funding acquisition experience is a plus. Ideal candidates have expertise in at least two of: ontologies, ontology design, ontological engineering, knowledge graphs, semantic technologies, large language models, and machine learning.
Funding and conditions:
this is a paid, fixed-term employment position under TVöD (VKA) pay grade 13, with benefits including a company pension plan, flexible work schedules, and remote work up to 80%. The contract runs until
30 September 2028
and can be full-time or part-time.
