Université de Strasbourg is offering a 12-month postdoctoral position in economics within BETA (Bureau d’Économie Théorique et Appliquée), a major research unit in Strasbourg with strong traditions in economics, economic thought, and applied theory. The project is led by Sina Badiei and connected to BETA’s wider research environment, including collaboration with senior researchers and doctoral researchers in the laboratory. The postdoc will work on the project “A Historical Analysis of the Contributions of Theoretical and Computational Social Choice to Ecological Economics” . The research examines how social choice theory, computational social choice, and ecological economics have developed strategies for restricting individual preference domains in a non-arbitrary and robust way when ranking social ends. The project is especially interested in ideas around Arrow’s impossibility theorem, unrestricted domain, single-peaked preferences, single-crossing preferences, and value-restricted preferences, and how these formal debates may inform ecological economics and the prioritization of social ends compatible with environmental sustainability. The appointed researcher will devote full time to project research, contribute to the historical evolution of normative economics since Arrow, and study how theoretical and computational analyses might support discussions of ecological and environmental crises. The position also includes participation in BETA seminars and national and international conferences. Applicants must hold a PhD in economics or the history and philosophy of economics, awarded no more than three years before the contract starts, and should demonstrate strong knowledge in at least one of the following areas: social choice theory, computational social choice, or ecological economics. The successful candidate should also have solid computational and/or formal methods skills, and an interest in the historical and philosophical aspects of theoretical debates. English fluency is required; French is not mandatory, though basic knowledge is appreciated. The post is a temporary, full-time postdoctoral contract under public law for 12 months, with an expected start date of 1 December 2026 or earlier.
