Hinrich Schulenburg

PhD position in the Schulenburg group at the University of Kiel, Germany, focused on antimicrobial resistance evolution. The project investigates how evolutionary principles can be used to constrain bacterial adaptation to antimicrobial drugs. A main emphasis is placed on mutation rates and their effects on resistance evolution across different antimicrobials, as well as on evolutionary trade-offs such as collateral sensitivity. The model organisms include uropathogenic E. coli and/or lung-infecting Pseudomonas aeruginosa . The successful candidate will join the Schulenburg group and be integrated into the graduate school on Translational Evolutionary Research, offering opportunities for exchange with researchers working on related topics. This is a full-time, temporary PhD position for 3.5 years with a possible extension of 6 months. The application deadline is 23 August 2026 at 22:00 (Europe/Berlin). Eligibility highlights include a Master of Science or equivalent in Evolutionary Biology or Microbiology, experimental and molecular lab experience with microorganisms, knowledge of statistics or bioinformatics, and English at C1 level.
