Tampere University is inviting applications for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) Doctoral Candidate position within the EU-funded ANCHOR Doctoral Network. The project sits at the intersection of integrated circuits, signal processing, and next-generation wireless communications, with a particular focus on large-array transceivers, beamforming, near-field processing, and energy-efficient receiver architectures.
The doctoral researcher will work in the Electrical Engineering unit at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences, contributing to research that aims to improve the performance and energy efficiency of future communication systems. The work includes developing and validating signal processing concepts, designing hardware architectures for beamforming, performing system-level modelling and simulation, and designing, taping out, and experimentally characterizing integrated circuit prototypes. The role also involves publishing in leading journals and conferences, collaborating with other doctoral candidates in the ANCHOR network, and contributing to network-wide training and deliverables.
The position includes international secondments: 6 months at University College London and 4 months at Altice Labs in Portugal. These placements provide exposure to both academic and industrial research environments and strengthen the candidate’s international profile in communications and circuit design.
Funding is provided through the MSCA framework as a fully funded 36-month fixed-term doctoral position. The estimated gross monthly salary is approximately €3,950 without family allowance and approximately €4,450 with family allowance, subject to MSCA Doctoral Candidate regulations and the Finnish University Salary System.
Eligibility is restricted by MSCA Doctoral Network rules. Applicants must not hold a PhD at the time of recruitment and must have a relevant master’s degree by the start of employment. Candidates of any nationality may apply, but they must comply with the MSCA mobility rule and must not have lived or carried out their main activity in Finland for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the start date. The successful applicant must also be admitted to doctoral studies at Tampere University, and formal English language requirements must be fulfilled by enrollment. Strong written and spoken English skills are essential.
Applicants should ideally have an M.Sc. or equivalent in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related area, with a strong interest in integrated circuit design and future communication systems. Beneficial experience includes signal processing, MATLAB or Python-based modelling, ASIC and HDL design flows, digital circuit and DSP hardware design, analog and RF circuit design, Cadence Virtuoso, FPGA or RF-SoC prototyping, and EDA tools such as Cadence or ModelSim. Prior tape-out experience is welcomed but not required.
The position is based at Tampere University’s Hervanta campus in Finland, a major Nordic technology hub with modern laboratories, advanced research infrastructure, and a strong collaborative research community.
