Doctoral Researcher in Machine Learning and Cybersecurity

The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary and international research university in Finland, invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in Machine Learning and Cybersecurity. The successful candidate will join the Biomimetics and Intelligent Systems Group (BISG) within the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. BISG is renowned for its research in Data Analysis, Robotics, Secure Programming, and Bio-IT, with application areas spanning industrial optimization, Industry 4.0, health and well-being systems, environmental monitoring using mobile robots, dependable IoT, and artificial-natural systems. This position is part of the DIAMOND project, funded by the European Union through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme. The project focuses on developing data-efficient machine learning and deep learning models for sensor/data fusion at the edge, proactive spatiotemporal forecasting, and decision-making for edge-cloud continuum systems. The researcher will extend these solutions to address cybersecurity challenges, including various attack scenarios and mitigation methods. The work includes creating performance metrics for autonomous robotic perception and reasoning systems, applying physics-aware approaches with geometric constraints and prior knowledge. The developed frameworks will be demonstrated in DIAMOND project examples, such as UAV inspection and art transport, ensuring sectoral adaptability and open access programming. The position offers a supportive and enthusiastic team environment, wellness benefits (ePassi), career development opportunities, and a flexible workplace promoting work-life balance. The University of Oulu provides a Buddy Programme and Spouse Network to assist newcomers. The institution holds the HR Excellence in Research label, recognizing its commitment to researchers' working conditions and career development. Finland is known for its high quality of life, safety, excellent education system, and competitive economy. Funding includes a fixed-term contract for 3 years, a starting gross salary of approximately 4200 € per month (before taxes), mobility allowance, and family allowance for up to 27 months if applicable. The position allows for two secondments with project partners, including potential industrial collaboration. Applicants must have a Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, completed before the application deadline. Fluent English is required, and experience in Machine Learning or Cybersecurity (preferably both), programming, mathematics, and statistics is expected. Finnish language skills and prior experience in ML and cybersecurity are considered advantageous. Candidates should be able to work in a diverse, international research environment and meet the requirements of the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS). To apply, submit your application online by 22.2.2026, including a cover letter, CV (following Finnish Advisory Board guidelines), certificates/diplomas, and contact information for two referees. Applications must be written in English. Eligible candidates will be invited to an interview, and all applicants will be notified during the selection process.
