Fully Funded PhD in Microplastics and Marine Heatwaves in Marine Invertebrates

Exciting fully funded PhD opportunity in marine biology , ecotoxicology , and ecophysiology at the Marine Biological Association , with research also carried out at the University of Plymouth . The project, titled “Double whammy? The combined effects of microplastics and marine heatwaves on digestive physiology and performance in marine invertebrates” , will investigate how two major environmental stressors— microplastics and marine heatwaves —interact to affect the health and fitness of ecologically and commercially important species, including edible crabs (Cancer pagurus) and blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) . The successful PhD student will use experimental studies and will have access to state-of-the-art aquarium and laboratory facilities across both institutes. Training is provided in experimental design and implementation, ecotoxicology, in vivo physiology, data handling, statistical analysis, scientific writing, and presenting. This is a fully funded PhD within the ARIES Doctoral Training Programme , starting October 2027 . Prior experience working with aquatic organisms is helpful but not required. Supervision is by Alice Horton (Marine Biological Association), Dr Trystan Sanders (MBA), Dr Manuela Trubano (University of Plymouth), and Prof. John Spicer (University of Plymouth). Interested applicants should review the project link and follow the ARIES DTP application route.
