Doctoral scholarship holder in optometry and ophthalmology

The University of Antwerp is offering a full-time doctoral scholarship holder position in the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The successful candidate will work at the Visual Optics Lab Antwerp (VOLANTIS) on a PhD thesis in optometry and ophthalmology. The project focuses on developing a mathematical model of human eye growth as a dynamic system. The research is collaborative and aims to integrate optical, mechanical, and retinal aspects of the eye through work with other laboratories. This is a strong opportunity for candidates interested in vision science, eye modelling, and multidisciplinary biomedical research. The PhD researcher will prepare a research plan and methods with the supervisor, carry out the research, report progress, present findings at conferences, aim for scientific publication, and contribute to ongoing research activities in the group. The role also involves applying for internal or external predoctoral funding as needed. Applicants should hold a master’s degree in Physics, Mathematics, or a related field, with excellent academic results. Experience with MATLAB and dynamical systems is required. Background or experience in Optometry, Neuroscience, and/or Structural Engineering is recommended. Good English communication skills are needed. The scholarship is initially offered for one year and may be extended through competitive external funding. The starting date is planned for 1 November 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The funding package includes a monthly doctoral scholarship, plus ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of commuting costs by public transport. Applications must be submitted via the University of Antwerp online application platform by 31 August 2026 (Brussels time). Applicants should include a motivation letter and academic CV. For application-related questions, contact [email protected]. For questions about the position, contact Prof. dr. Jos Rozema at [email protected].
