M.Sc. Opportunities in Environmental Sciences and Geosciences at Midwestern State University (Remote Sensing, Hydrogeology, Carbon Cycle)
Midwestern State University (MSU Texas) is inviting applications for M.Sc. positions in Environmental Sciences and Geosciences, supervised by Dr. Kashif Mahmud, Assistant Professor of Geosciences and head of the Remote Sensing and Modeling Lab. The lab focuses on cutting-edge research in remote sensing, hydrogeology, terrestrial carbon cycle, geospatial modeling, and environmental system characterization. Current projects include integrating remote sensing and water infiltration data to study karst aquifers, using LiDAR and cave drip loggers, and improving forest biomass monitoring with high-resolution LiDAR and digital tree segmentation algorithms. The research addresses earth system dynamics, ecosystem changes, hydrology, forestry, and the impacts of environmental disturbances using advanced geostatistical and stochastic image analysis methods.
Applicants should have a B.S. or B.A. in geosciences or related disciplines, with a minimum GPA of 3.00. An IELTS score of 6 is required for non-native English speakers, and the GRE is not required. Students from related sciences or engineering are encouraged to apply, though additional coursework may be required. The program values strong recommendation letters and application essays, and conditional admission is possible for those not meeting all requirements.
Funding is available through research grants and assistantships, with priority given to early applicants. The lab is currently funded by multiple grants, including projects on groundwater recharge in karst aquifers, urban tree biomass estimation, and regional flood planning. Students will have the opportunity to work on funded research projects and gain experience in advanced remote sensing, GIS, and environmental modeling techniques.
The application deadline for full consideration for Fall 2025 is March 1, 2025. Interested candidates should review the graduate program and faculty profiles, then email Dr. Kashif Mahmud with their CV and research interests. The formal application is completed through the MSU Texas McAda Graduate School, including submission of three recommendation letters and all required documents. For more information, visit the
program website
or contact Dr. Mahmud directly.
