Post-doctoral Researcher in Epidemiology / Health Services Research

The University of Oulu is seeking a Post-doctoral Researcher in Epidemiology / Health Services Research to join the Research Unit for Population Health (PoPH) at the Faculty of Medicine in Oulu, Finland. This post-doctoral position is part of Health Dimensions, a multidisciplinary research initiative funded by the Research Council of Finland. The project focuses on the complex, multidimensional nature of human health and aims to improve understanding of how lifelong molecular, physiological, environmental, behavioural, and societal mechanisms contribute to chronic disease and multimorbidity. The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team with expertise in life course epidemiology, medical statistics, psychology, and clinical medicine. The research will examine early-life factors such as gestational age and birth weight and their roles in childhood and adolescent multimorbidity, as well as the pathways linking early exposures to later multiple chronic diseases. The position is strongly data-intensive and will involve analysing large nationwide health, healthcare, and sociodemographic datasets from Finland and other Nordic countries. Key duties include cleaning and managing large register-based datasets, applying advanced longitudinal and causal inference methods, writing and publishing scientific articles, presenting findings at conferences and meetings, and contributing to future funding applications. The role offers an excellent environment for independent research, collaboration, and career development within a highly international and supportive university setting. Applicants should have a doctoral degree in epidemiology, health services research, medical statistics, medicine, or another quantitative field. Experience with electronic health records, administrative data, and statistical software such as Stata, SAS, R, or Python is expected, along with strong English communication skills and a publication record in health research. The position also values Finnish language skills and experience or interest in teaching and supervision. The appointment is fixed-term for two years, starting 1 September 2026, with a starting gross salary of approximately 3900-4200 EUR per month plus a performance-based component. The application deadline is 30 July 2026. Applications must be submitted in English via the University of Oulu’s Varbi recruitment system.
