3-year PhD in Sulfur Cycling in Wetlands and its Coupling to Iron and Carbon
The Applied Geochemistry group at the Institute of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Freiburg (Germany) is recruiting a
3-year PhD position
on
sulfur cycling in wetlands
and its coupling to
iron
and
carbon
cycling.
The project focuses on sulfur redox transformations in oxygen-limited wetland environments such as peatlands and the Wadden Sea, where sulfate can be converted to sulfide and interact with iron minerals. The research combines experimental work, analytical method development, and fieldwork in the Black Forest to study sulfur pools and transformations in minerotrophic peatlands.
Research methods include
HPLC
,
LC-ICP-MS
, laboratory experiments, and synchrotron-based data acquisition. The successful candidate will also help identify field sites, contact landowners and authorities, publish in peer-reviewed journals, present at conferences, and contribute to teaching and laboratory practicals.
Applicants should have an MSc or equivalent in environmental science, geoecology, environmental chemistry, geomicrobiology, or a related field. The role requires strong motivation for interdisciplinary research, scientific curiosity, teamwork, willingness to travel, and excellent English; German is an advantage. A B driver’s license is beneficial.
The position is part-time (70%), limited to three years, and paid according to
