Postdoctoral Associate in Trustworthy AI, Law & Society at University of Maryland
The University of Maryland, in collaboration with the Institute for Trustworthy AI in Law & Society (TRAILS), invites applications for a postdoctoral associate position starting in summer or fall 2026. This unique opportunity is ideal for researchers interested in advancing trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) with a focus on ethics, human rights, and the inclusion of marginalized communities. TRAILS is a joint research, education, and outreach institute funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST), and is led by the University of Maryland, The George Washington University, Morgan State University, and Cornell University.
The postdoctoral associate will join an interdisciplinary research community, working closely with faculty and students across fields such as machine learning, human computer interaction, information science, linguistics, engineering, education, psychology, law, and public policy. The position offers the chance to pursue independent research aligned with TRAILS' mission, contribute to ongoing projects, and participate in institute leadership. Mentorship will be provided by at least two TRAILS faculty members, with preference for applicants whose research bridges multiple disciplines or institutions.
Applicants must have completed or be near completion of a Ph.D. in a relevant field by the start date. They should demonstrate research ability through at least two publications or equivalent writing samples, and show a strong interest or ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment. Strong communication skills and engagement with the broader scientific community are also required. The position is funded for one or two years, but specific stipend or salary details are not provided.
To apply, candidates should complete the online application form, submit a curriculum vitae, an academic statement (up to three pages), and two representative writing samples. The application deadline is August 1, 2026. For more information, visit the provided links.
