PhD researcher on labour market forecasting
Steunpunt Werk, a policy-oriented research center within the Faculty of Economics and Business at KU Leuven, is offering a four-year PhD position focused on labour market forecasting. The project is commissioned by the Flemish Government and aims to develop macro-level skills forecasts for Flanders, addressing the challenges posed by the green transition, technological change, and shifting geopolitical landscapes. The research will contribute to understanding future labour market imbalances by integrating data on labour supply, demand, occupations, sectors, and skills.
As a PhD researcher, you will develop and apply advanced forecasting methods to estimate how new graduates enter the labour market, measure and classify their skills, and analyze how these skills align with current and future labour market needs. The project emphasizes sectoral, occupational, and skill profile differences, utilizing rich Flemish labour market and education datasets. You will conduct innovative research on school-leaver forecasts, skills mapping, and skills mismatch, and contribute to broader labour supply forecasting models, including workforce projections.
The position offers engagement with key debates in education economics, labour economics, and policy evaluation, including the responsiveness of education systems to technological and demographic shifts. A central goal is to translate rigorous empirical research into actionable policy insights for stakeholders such as policymakers, education and training providers, and public employment services. The research environment is dynamic and policy-oriented, providing opportunities to contribute to both international academic literature and regional policy development.
Supervision will be provided by Professor Sarah Vansteenkiste and Professor Kristof De Witte. The doctoral program at KU Leuven is internationally renowned and individualized, consisting of four years of full-time study leading to a PhD in (Applied) Economics. The position is funded by a competitive full-time PhD scholarship, with additional benefits including health insurance, reduced public transport prices, free bicycle use, and access to university sports facilities. The scholarship is conditional upon a positive evaluation after the first year.
Applicants must hold a one or two year advanced research master in (applied) economics with advanced courses, comparable to KU Leuven's 'Master of Science in Advanced Studies in Economics' or the 'Master of Research in Economics' at European University Institute. At least 'cum laude' (honors) during initial master years, preferably also during advanced research master, is required. Strong skills in statistical, econometric, and quantitative data analysis, proficiency in English, and scientific writing skills are essential. Knowledge of Dutch is a strong advantage. Candidates must be motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team, and must enroll in the PhD program in (applied) economics at KU Leuven.
