Chalmers University of Technology

Doctoral Student in AI-Based Groundwater Modelling and Decision Support

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in AI-Based Groundwater Modelling and Decision Support. This opportunity is based in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, which addresses challenges in the built and natural environment, including resource utilization, pollution, climate change, digitalization, and inequality. The Engineering Geology research area focuses on groundwater flow, drinking water supply, remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater, underground infrastructure construction, and subsurface planning. The research project aims to advance decision-support tools for groundwater managers, enabling smarter, data-driven decisions regarding water resources. You will investigate the information needs of decision-makers in contexts such as environmental impacts of transportation infrastructure and drinking water supply. By integrating multi-fidelity geospatial and operational data with numerical modelling and data-driven approaches—including statistical learning, AI, and value-of-information analysis—you will help design next-generation tools for sustainable groundwater management. As a doctoral student, you will take advanced courses within the Graduate School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, develop scientific concepts, communicate research results, write and publish scientific papers, and collaborate with industrial partners. The position includes teaching or other duties up to 20% of working hours, potentially extending the appointment to five years. Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits in Civil Engineering with specialization in Hydrogeology. For students educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted. Strong written and verbal English skills and experience with numerical modelling and data analysis (Python, R, MATLAB) are required. Practical hydrogeological field experience, decision support methods, and Swedish language skills are advantageous. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. Funding: The position is fully funded from the start, with a starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month (valid from May 1, 2026). As an employee, you will enjoy all benefits offered by Chalmers, including a dynamic working environment in Gothenburg, generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. Chalmers is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, and offers Swedish courses for non-native speakers. Application Process: Applications must be written in English and submitted as PDF files (maximum 40 MB each) via the online application form. Required documents include CV, personal letter, motivation, thesis, and transcripts. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. Contact details for references will be requested after the interview. The deadline for applications is August 7, 2026. For questions, contact Professor Lars Rosén ([email protected]).
