Three multidisciplinary postdoctoral scholarships (2 years) at Umeå University (IceLab)

IceLab at Umeå University is offering three two-year postdoctoral scholarships in interdisciplinary science, funded by Kempestiftelserna . The positions are designed for researchers who want to work at the interface of theory, computation, and experiment across biology, ecology, physics, statistics, and related quantitative fields. Applicants may apply to one or more of five projects: (A) mechanistic modelling of cell wall integrity sensing in Chlorella vulgaris ; (B) modelling sigma-factor competition and RNA polymerase allocation under stress in Yersinia pseudotuberculosis ; (C) adaptive immunity as an evolutionary response to stress; (D) multitrophic interaction networks and species coexistence under global change; and (E) stress, resilience, and performance in elite female athletes. Each project is supervised by a multidisciplinary team, and the three most promising project–candidate pairs will be selected for funding. The scientific scope is broad but united by a common theme: using quantitative approaches to study complex living systems. Relevant expertise includes computational and mathematical modelling, statistical modelling, machine learning, network science, bioinformatics, applied mathematics, biophysics, systems biology, dynamical systems, ecology, microbiology, immunology, and sports medicine/physiology. The program especially values candidates who are motivated by collaboration between theoretical and empirical researchers. Funding consists of a tax-free stipendium of 720,000 SEK over two years , plus 75,000 SEK for research expenses . The intended start date is between January and April 2027 . Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent degree by the time of the decision, and preference is given to candidates who completed the degree within the last three years, unless special reasons apply. Applications must be written in English or Swedish and submitted via Umeå University’s Varbi recruitment system by 17 September 2026 . Required documents include a cover letter naming the project(s) of interest, CV with publication list, doctoral degree documentation, transcripts, thesis, relevant publications, and contact information for at least two referees.
