two PhD positions
in
grease lubrication for rolling bearings research
within the SKF University Technology Centre for Grease Lubrication, based in the Department of Mechanics of Solids, Surfaces and Systems (MS3), Faculty of Engineering Technology.
The project focuses on understanding
grease degradation
,
contamination
, and the
distribution, mixing, and flow of grease in rolling bearings
. A major motivation is the need to improve re-lubrication strategies for high-tech and maintenance-sensitive equipment such as electric motors and wind turbines. The research addresses a current knowledge gap in how fresh and degraded grease mix during re-lubrication and how this affects bearing reliability and performance.
The successful candidates will develop
experimentally validated physics-based models
of the bearing as a thermo-dynamic open system with interacting processes such as grease flow, mixing, contamination, and degradation. The work will be carried out in a strong international and collaborative environment at the Surface Technology and Tribology group at the University of Twente, with active involvement from industrial partners.
Research tasks include independent but collaborative project work, regular progress discussions, presentations at scientific conferences, and publication in peer-reviewed journals. The position offers an excellent scientific setting for students interested in tribology, lubrication, fluid mechanics, and applied mechanics.
Eligibility:
applicants should hold a master’s degree in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, with a strong interest in lubrication and a background in tribology and fluid mechanics. Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills are expected, together with fluency in English.
Funding and terms:
this is a four-year full-time PhD position with a qualifier exam after 6–9 months. The salary starts at €3,059 gross per month in the first year and increases to €3,881 in the fourth year, plus an 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus. Additional benefits include 41 holiday days per year, pension, research support, and access to Twente Graduate School development opportunities.
