Stability and Control Interaction of Multi-terminal HVDC Systems
This PhD project at The University of Manchester focuses on the stability and control interaction of multi-terminal High Voltage DC (HVDC) systems, a critical area for the integration of offshore renewable energy into the electrical grid. As global Net Zero commitments drive the expansion of renewable generation, much of this energy will be produced offshore and transported to shore via HVDC transmission. While traditional HVDC links have been point-to-point, emerging proposals aim to develop multi-terminal grids for enhanced reliability and asset utilisation.
The research will explore various multi-terminal HVDC scheme configurations, including combinations of DC voltage controlling stations (such as single and multiple droop control) and active power controlling stations. Using Matlab/SIMULINK, the candidate will develop models of bipole converters with neutral current regulation. The project will investigate the interactions between converter stations operating with AC grid-forming functionality, and will develop methodologies to determine stability criteria and tuning strategies to ensure interoperability of power electronic devices, DC system stability, and provision of ancillary services to support the AC grid.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with GE Vernova’s engineering staff and spend part of their time at GE Vernova’s main HVDC design office in Stafford, UK. This experience will provide exposure to the design, manufacturing, and advanced testing of HVDC power electronics and control systems, as well as large power converter transformers.
Funding for this 3.5-year PhD studentship includes an annual tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£20,780 for 2025/26, subject to annual uplift), a company top up of £5000 per annum, funding for travel and consumables, and full tuition fees. The stipend is expected to increase each year. The preferred start date is July 2026.
Eligibility requires at least a 2.1 honours degree or a master’s (or international equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline. The position is open to UK (Home) applicants only.
