MOSSFLOW: Mechanisms Of Sphagnum Controlling Surface Flow is a fully funded PhD opportunity at The University of Manchester, focusing on the critical role of Sphagnum mosses in peatland hydrology and ecosystem restoration. Sphagnum mosses are keystone species in peatland ecosystems, acting as ecosystem engineers that maintain wet conditions, promote bog growth, and underpin vital ecosystem services such as biodiversity, flood alleviation, and carbon sequestration. However, these mosses are highly sensitive to disturbance, and the UK’s extensive blanket peatlands have suffered significant damage over the past two centuries due to pollution and human activity. This project aims to advance our understanding of how replanting Sphagnum affects peatland hydrology and flood risk reduction by quantifying the surface roughness introduced by these mosses. The successful candidate will conduct fieldwork at the Kinder National Nature Reserve and laboratory work using experimental flumes. Collaboration with the Moors for the Future Partnership, the National Trust, and colleagues at Newcastle University and Manchester Metropolitan University is integral to the project. The studentship covers International/Home fees, a stipend, and a Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) for 3.5 years, starting in September 2026. Two academic referees are required, and all documents must be submitted with the application. No separate PhD proposal is needed.
