PhD Candidate in Colour and Image Enhancement for Wireless Capsule Endoscopy

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is offering a 36-month full-time PhD position in the Department of Computer Science, based in Gjøvik, Norway. The project is part of the EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network CAPTURE, an international research consortium focused on advancing wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) through computer vision and artificial intelligence. The PhD project addresses a clinically important challenge: improving the diagnostic quality and reliability of WCE image and video data through advanced colour correction, contrast enhancement, and consistent visualisation. The work aims to develop methods for combined colour and contrast enhancement, define a suitable colour palette and reference target for gastrointestinal imaging, establish reproducible measurement protocols, quantify inter-device variability, and create objective and subjective evaluation methods for colour fidelity and image quality. A display visualisation pipeline for perceptually accurate viewing conditions is also part of the project. The candidate will work within the Colourlab research group and collaborate with academic, healthcare, and industry partners across Europe. The CAPTURE network includes workshops, conferences, transferable skills training, and research secondments. Planned secondments include placements at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Granada, giving the doctoral researcher exposure to clinical and international research environments. Eligibility requirements include a relevant master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, imaging science, or an equivalent discipline, with a substantial independent project or thesis component. Applicants should have experience in imaging, colour science, colour metrology, image processing, or medical imaging, as well as strong programming skills and excellent English communication ability. The MSCA mobility rule applies, and applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree. The position is conditional on external funding and offers a gross salary normally of NOK 580,000 per year, covering the MSCA living and mobility allowances, with a possible family allowance under MSCA rules. The expected start date is 1 August 2027. Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no by 19 November 2026. Supervision contacts listed in the advertisement are Professor Marius Pedersen and Associate Professor Peter Nussbaum.
