Postdoctoral position in modeling laboratory workflows for self-driving laboratories

Stanford University is advertising a postdoctoral position in the modeling of laboratory workflows to program self-driving laboratories within the Division of Computational Medicine / Biomedical Informatics Research. The project sits at the intersection of cheminformatics , biomedical informatics , chemistry , biotechnology , and computer science . The team is developing technology to help researchers specify laboratory procedures for remote execution by robot-controlled, programmable cloud laboratories, with a broader goal of improving how scientists share results and execute experiments. The postdoc will work with a multidisciplinary group of software engineers, modelers, educators, and scientific investigators. The role is especially suited to applicants with hands-on laboratory experience who can translate ambiguous experimental descriptions into precise, machine-actionable workflow specifications and help educate others about automated techniques. Eligibility highlights: an earned doctoral degree in cheminformatics, biomedical informatics, the natural sciences, or a related field; first-hand experience with laboratory workflows in biotechnology, analytical chemistry, or a related experimental discipline; strong problem-solving ability; independence; mentoring and teaching experience; collaboration skills; and excellent English communication. Desirable experience: structured knowledge representation in chemistry or biomedicine, including classes/properties/relationships, and building AI systems with large language models. Funding: this is a paid postdoctoral appointment with an expected base salary of $80,000–$95,000 for a 1–2 year renewable term . How to apply: email Mark A. Musen at [email protected] with a cover letter, CV, and the names/contact information for 2–3 references. The post does not list a formal deadline, and the start date is September 1, 2026 or ASAP .
