Postdoctoral Researcher in Urban Regeneration

The University of Luxembourg invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in the field of Urban Regeneration, based within the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE). This position is embedded in the Chair of the City of Esch, led by Professor Markus Miessen, and is closely linked to the think tank Cultures of Assembly, which operates as an urban laboratory in Southern Luxembourg (The Minett). The research focus includes urban regeneration, urban commoning, democracy building, and the development of alternative community-building models and participatory planning approaches in cross-border contexts. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, interdisciplinary team in the Department of Geography and Spatial Planning, contributing to research on urban conflicts, migration, governance, and spatial transformation. Responsibilities include leading a design studio and theory seminar, supervising Master's theses, teaching urban and territorial design, publishing academic work, organizing seminars and conferences, and supporting the Chair's web presence and outreach activities. The role also involves tutoring students and PhD candidates, grading examinations, and handling administrative tasks. Applicants must hold a Master in architecture and a PhD in architecture, urbanism, or a related field, with a strong publication record in architecture, urbanism, or territorial design. Experience in teaching, tutoring, and organizing research events is essential, as is proficiency in English and either German or French. Social sensitivity, excellent communication skills, and a proactive attitude are key attributes. Knowledge of Portuguese is an asset but not required. The position offers a fixed-term contract of 24 months, with a competitive yearly gross salary of EUR 85,176. The University of Luxembourg provides a modern, international, and multilingual environment, with high-quality facilities and strong connections to both academic and non-academic partners in the region. The institution values inclusivity and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds. To apply, candidates should submit a CV, cover letter, transcripts, list of publications, and a design and writing portfolio via the University of Luxembourg's online HR system by 31 January 2026. The application should clearly articulate the candidate's motivation and alignment with the research objectives of the Chair of the City of Esch.
