PhD Opportunity in Marine Biology and Climate Change at Ghent University

Ghent University’s Marine Biology Research Group is advertising a PhD opportunity in Marine Biology focused on marine ecology , climate change , and experimental research . The successful candidate will work with Prof. Dr. Marleen De Troch to co-develop a PhD project on how marine organisms respond to global environmental change, including warming , ocean acidification , deoxygenation , and other environmental stressors. Possible research directions include experimental ecology , organismal physiology , trophic interactions , marine food webs , and biochemical methods such as lipidomics . This is an 11-month PhD Start-up Fellowship intended to help the selected candidate develop a competitive FWO PhD Fellowship proposal (Aspirant or SBO) while already beginning research in the group. The post is therefore especially suitable for candidates who want to build a strong PhD proposal in a collaborative marine science environment. Eligibility: applicants should have a Master’s degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Environmental Sciences, or a related discipline. The post also highlights the need for a strong interest in experimental research and quantitative data analysis . Application deadline: 15 August 2026. Online interviews: end of August 2026. Earliest start date: 1 October 2026. How to apply: send a CV (maximum 3 pages), motivation letter, academic transcripts, and the contact details of two referees to [email protected] with the subject line STARTUP PhD Application .
