PhD in Advanced Bioelectronic and Electrical Conversion Research
Doctoral Position in Advanced Bioelectronic & Electrical Conversion Research
at
ETH Zurich
(Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering, Basel, Switzerland).
The Biotechnology and Bioengineering group led by
Prof. Dr. Martin Fussenegger
invites applications for a
PhD position
focused on the intersection of
synthetic biology
,
nanotechnology
,
bioelectronics
,
electrical engineering
, and
bioelectronic medicine
. The project aims to engineer programmable human cells that respond to electrical, electromagnetic, acoustic, and biochemical cues for wireless, real-time control of therapeutic protein expression and metabolic regulation.
Research topics include catalyst engineering, computational simulation, bioelectrode device fabrication, closed-loop programming of cellular behaviour, real-time monitoring of metabolic activity, and the design of novel bioelectronic implants and specialized control software.
Applicants should ideally have a background in physics, materials science, or chemistry, with experience in bioelectronics or software simulations preferred. Strong knowledge of electrochemistry and materials chemistry is highlighted, along with the ability to collaborate with molecular biologists and bioengineers. The group seeks highly motivated candidates with a strong academic record and interest in industrial R&D or entrepreneurship.
Applications must be submitted online through the ETH Zurich portal. Required documents: CV, complete academic transcripts, publication list, motivation letter, two recommendation letters, and a brief one-page research plan. Questions about the position should be directed to Professor Martin Fussenegger at [email protected] (no applications by email).
The post is based in Basel, Switzerland, and offers the research environment of ETH Zurich’s Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering, with interdisciplinary collaboration across biology, engineering, materials science, physics, and chemistry.
