Rheology and Hydrodynamics of Algal and Cyanobacteria Co-Cultures

This PhD project, titled 'Rheology and Hydrodynamics of Algal and Cyanobacteria Co-Cultures', aims to advance the field of algal biotechnology by developing predictive models for the rheological and hydrodynamic behavior of high-density mixed algal cultures. As industrial algal cultivation increasingly adopts co-cultivation strategies to boost productivity and system resilience, understanding the complex interactions in mixed suspensions is critical for efficient photobioreactor design and operation. The research will employ advanced rheological characterization and hydrodynamic analysis to optimize energy-efficient algal bioprocesses. The successful candidate will join the Algal Biosystems and Biotechnology Team and the Climate Change Cluster at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), with significant collaborative research periods at IMT Nord Europe’s Center for Energy and Environment in Douai, France. This international collaboration leverages UTS's expertise in algal biotechnology and IMT's advanced hydrodynamic facilities, bridging laboratory research with real-world industrial-scale implementation. Applicants must hold a UTS-recognised degree, such as MSc Research or MSc Coursework with a research thesis of at least 6 months, or a Bachelor Honours degree with First Class or Second-Class Division 1, or equivalent. Experience in biotechnology, chemical engineering, process engineering, fluid mechanics, or related fields is required. A strong background in at least one of microbiology, rheology, fluid dynamics, or bioprocess engineering is essential. Candidates should demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to learn quickly, work independently, and collaborate effectively in international teams. High motivation for interdisciplinary research and a willingness to learn programming and acquire new skills are expected. The ability to commence studies by September 2025 and willingness to undertake extended research periods in France (6-12 months total) are necessary. Experience with microalgae cultivation, rheological measurements, experimental fluid mechanics, programming skills (MATLAB, Python), and previous international research experience are highly desirable. The position offers a stipend of $37,000 per year and an additional $7,500 for PhD-related expenses over 3.5 years, making it a fully funded opportunity. Domestic students (Australian residents or New Zealand citizens) are eligible to apply. The application process is open until all positions are filled, with a deadline of May 13, 2026. Interested candidates should submit their CV and list of publications to Associate Professor Mathieu Pernice at [email protected]. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted with further details. For more information on application essentials, visit the UTS Graduate Research applications page. This project is ideal for candidates passionate about interdisciplinary research, international collaboration, and driving innovation in algal biotechnology from bench to industry. Additional fully funded scholarships, studentships, and awards are available at university, faculty, and department levels to support both domestic and overseas students.
