PhD in Medical Imaging of Childbirth-Related Pelvic Floor Injuries
PhD position at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, in the area of
medical imaging of childbirth-related pelvic floor injuries
. The project sits within the third-cycle subject
Technology and Health
and is hosted by the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems. It is aimed at a highly motivated candidate with a strong interest in medical technology development and research, especially in women’s health.
The doctoral student will work in an interdisciplinary and international environment with engineers, clinicians, and researchers, and will collaborate closely with clinical partners at
Karolinska University Hospital
as well as international researchers in medical image analysis and biomechanical simulation. The research focus is the development of novel technologies to improve the diagnosis, prevention, and rehabilitation of childbirth-related injuries to the female pelvic floor muscles, an area highlighted as significantly under-researched despite its impact on women worldwide.
The project combines advanced medical imaging modalities including
ultrasound, MRI, and elastography
with
image analysis, image registration, and personalized simulation models
of the pelvic floor. The overarching aim is to improve understanding of injury mechanisms, identify risk factors, and support future patient-specific treatment strategies. This work is positioned at the intersection of biomedical engineering, medical imaging, and computational modelling.
The project is funded by
InspireLab
, KTH’s initiative for research and innovation that promotes gender equality in society. The doctoral student will receive a monthly salary according to KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement and be employed on a temporary full-time basis under KTH’s doctoral education regulations.
Eligibility requirements include basic postgraduate admission qualification through a second-cycle degree, at least 240 higher education credits with 60 at the second cycle, or equivalent knowledge, together with
English B/6
or equivalent. Preferred academic backgrounds include biomedical engineering, engineering physics, computer science, or related engineering fields. Selection also emphasizes the ability to work independently and collaboratively, maintain a professional approach, and contribute to an inclusive interdisciplinary research environment.
To apply, candidates must use KTH’s recruitment system and submit diplomas and transcripts, proof of language qualifications, a CV, a concise application letter describing research motivation and academic interests, and representative publications or technical reports. The closing date is
