[Home fees plus an annual UKRI-equivalent stipend of £16,354 for up to three years; international students would need to cover the fee difference.] University of Strathclyde is offering a funded PhD studentship on Unorthodox health activism in Britain after 1948 . The project explores the history of alternative approaches to health in Britain, focusing on the communities, activists, ideas, and everyday experiences that shaped unorthodox health movements in the post-1948 period. This studentship is affiliated with the Wellcome-funded project A Transnational History of AIDS Denial: Origins, Manifestations and Persistence, 1981 to the present , and the school welcomes proposals that engage with comparable unorthodox approaches to health in the 20th and/or 21st century. Possible research directions include the late 20th-century British anti-vaxx movement, cancer denial, complementary and alternative medicine, media representations of alternative health movements, regional unorthodox health activism, spiritual or religious health communities, and wellness movements. The project is academically suited to applicants with interests in history, health activism, public health responses, the history of medicine, and health-related social movements. The scholarship covers Home fees and provides a UKRI-equivalent stipend for the duration of study, with the project expected to be completed within three years. The stipend rate stated for commencement on 1 January 2027 is £16,354 per year (pro-rata of £21,805), paid in monthly instalments and likely to rise annually. International applications are welcomed, although successful international candidates would need to fund the difference between Home and International fees for each year of study.
