Recognised Researcher (Postdoc) in AI for Digital Humanities at the University of Crete

The University of Crete is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for the TALOS-AI4SSH project, an ERA Chairs initiative funded under HORIZON-WIDERA-2022-TALENTS-01 (GA 101087269). The position is based at the TALOS laboratory in Rethymno and sits within a broader effort to establish a Center of Excellence in Digital Humanities focused on data- and knowledge-driven Artificial Intelligence applications. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to all four work packages of the project, with a particular role in strengthening the links between research topics and supporting upcoming deliverables. The research environment is strongly interdisciplinary, combining digital humanities, computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, cultural heritage, web technologies, knowledge graphs, ontologies, RDF/OWL, SPARQL, and FAIR/open datasets. Key research topics include semantic annotation of texts, preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage, corpora analysis, digitalisation of education, HAI-NLP software for SSH, and standards for FAIR datasets. The successful candidate will help with horizontal activities across these areas, contribute to software and standards development, support open datasets, and assist with dissemination and training activities such as MOOCs on AI for SSH. The appointment is full-time for 12 months, with a maximum contract cost of 30,000 EUR, including contractor fees and legal deductions. The post is funded through a European framework-related programme, and the contract benefits from VAT exemption subject to applicable rules. Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field such as computational linguistics, digital humanities, computer science/informatics, artificial intelligence applied to digital humanities, or digital cultural heritage. They must also submit a research proposal of up to four pages that clearly aligns with TALOS objectives and includes an AI dimension. Additional desirable qualifications include experience with web technologies, a Master’s degree or integrated Master’s-level degree in a related discipline, and peer-reviewed publications. The selection process includes a practical computer-based test and an interview. The test covers web technologies, knowledge graphs and ontologies, and SPARQL, and candidates are expected to have a text/code editor, Protégé Desktop, and access to a SPARQL endpoint ready before the assessment. Interviews will assess academic background, problem-solving ability, motivation, ability to prioritise the position, teamwork, and initiative. Applications must be emailed to the University of Crete’s ELKE address and include the signed application form, signed CV, research proposal, supporting evidence, and signed GDPR notice, all in PDF format. Deadline for application is 28 October 2026 at 12:00 (Europe/Athens). The position is located in Rethymno, Crete, Greece.
