Experimental Polariton Photonics and Neuromorphic Computing

The successful candidate will join the
Light-Matter Interaction Group
led by
Prof. Michał Matuszewski
and collaborate closely with the experimental group of
Prof. Barbara Piętka
at the
Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw
. Employment is at CTP PAS, while laboratory work will be carried out mainly at the University of Warsaw’s advanced experimental infrastructure.
This is a strongly experimental postdoc focused on developing optical experiments that demonstrate neuromorphic functionalities in polaritonic systems. The project combines
nonlinear optics

semiconductor physics
,
photonic microstructures
, and
artificial intelligence
, with an emphasis on implementing neural-network operations directly in a physical optical platform. Research topics include
exciton-polaritons
, strong light-matter coupling at room temperature, optical microcavities, perovskite materials, polariton propagation, condensation, pattern recognition, and optical information processing.
Responsibilities include building and optimizing optical setups, performing spectroscopic and optical characterization of semiconductor and photonic structures, investigating nonlinear polariton phenomena, designing and running experiments for neuromorphic and neural-network operations, analysing data, using simple models and simulations, preparing publications, and presenting results at conferences and workshops. The role is full-time, on-site, and offers a salary of
PLN 12,000-16,000 gross per month
. The appointment is fixed-term for up to
9 months
, starting from
1 November 2026
at the earliest.
Applicants should hold a PhD in physical sciences or a related discipline, ideally in optics, photonics, condensed matter physics, semiconductor physics, or photonic engineering. Prior doctoral completion may still be acceptable if the degree will be conferred before employment starts and the current stage of the award procedure is documented. Experience with experimental optics/photonics, optical laser setups, quantitative data analysis, basic programming (Python/MATLAB), and excellent English are important. Desirable experience includes exciton-polariton physics, semiconductor microcavities, perovskites, nonlinear or time-resolved spectroscopy, waveguides, photonic networks, experimental automation, numerical modelling, and interest in neuromorphic photonics or optical neural networks.
