PhD Position in Chemistry and Materials Science (MOFs, COFs, Catalysis, Separation) at Illinois Institute of Technology

The Department of Chemistry at the Illinois Institute of Technology is seeking motivated PhD students to join the Center for Separation Science and Sustainability (CS3) starting in Spring 2026. The research group, led by Assistant Professor Mona Mohamed, focuses on the development of advanced materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and MOF-derived materials for applications in catalysis and separation science. The team is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in materials synthesis and characterization, especially those with experience in MOFs and COFs. Research areas include electrocatalysis, fixed-bed catalysis, and separation science, with an emphasis on innovative approaches to material design and application. The position offers a fully funded PhD opportunity, covering both stipend and tuition for five years, providing a supportive environment for academic and professional growth. Applicants should hold a BSc or MSc in Chemistry or Materials Science, possess a strong academic record (GPA ≥ 3.5/4.0), and demonstrate experience in at least one of the following fields: electrocatalysis, fixed-bed catalysis, or separation science. The application process requires submission of a cover letter, CV, transcripts, three references, and a publication list. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission is encouraged. This opportunity is ideal for students interested in cutting-edge research at the intersection of chemistry and materials science, particularly those passionate about catalysis, separation technologies, and the synthesis of novel materials. The Illinois Institute of Technology provides a dynamic research environment and access to state-of-the-art facilities within the CS3 center.
