This fully funded PhD studentship at the University of Glasgow investigates the complex relationship between school non-attendance, transport mode, and educational outcomes for children and young people in Scotland. The project leverages linked administrative data from the Scottish Government and household information from the Scottish Census 2022, offering a unique opportunity to explore how household transport arrangements impact school attendance, pupil well-being, and attainment. The research aims to provide new insights into the effects of school absence and exclusions on educational attainment and post-school destinations, assess the influence of transport mode on non-attendance and outcomes, and identify household characteristics that may mitigate or exacerbate risks associated with non-attendance. The studentship is part of ADR Scotland, a research group recently awarded £25 million by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) to advance public good research using administrative data. The project falls under the theme 'Children and Young People' and is led by Professor Morag Treanor. The successful candidate will join the School of Social & Political Sciences, College of Social Sciences, and benefit from a vibrant research environment focused on socioeconomics, social work, and urban studies. Eligibility criteria include a good Masters degree (or overseas equivalent), demonstrable interest in the research topic, and strong quantitative skills with experience in statistical software and advanced techniques. Applicants must meet the entry requirements for the Urban Studies, PhD programme and may study part-time or full-time. The funding package covers an annual maintenance grant (stipend) at the UKRI rate, tuition fees at the standard home or international rate, and a Research Training Support Grant up to £940 per year.
