PhD Student at ILL: Advanced Neutron Imaging for Defect Mapping in Repaired Aero-Engine Components

The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, is offering a PhD position focused on advanced neutron imaging for defect mapping in repaired aero-engine components. This project is a collaboration between the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), a world-leading neutron science facility, and The University of Manchester (UK). The successful candidate will join the Applied Science Group at ILL and be enrolled in the doctoral school at the University of Manchester, with research conducted primarily at ILL and at least two months of secondment at the Henry Moseley X-ray Imaging Facility in Manchester. The PhD project aims to develop and apply advanced neutron imaging methodologies to establish quantitative links between processing conditions, microstructural evolution, residual deformation, and defect formation in repaired titanium and nickel-based alloys. The research will focus on laser-blown-powder (LBP) directed energy deposition, a technique used to repair high-value aero-engine components such as blisks. The project will address the challenges of qualifying repaired metallic components by investigating internal defect populations and understanding how LBP processing parameters influence defect generation and distribution. Research will be conducted using neutron imaging instruments (NeXT, MoTo, and PorTo) at ILL, with complementary laboratory X-ray imaging at The University of Manchester. The project is part of the NEXTSTEP programme, which trains researchers to exploit analytical research infrastructures for sustainable development and industrial competitiveness in areas such as health, digital industry, climate, energy, mobility, and natural resources. Applicants should have a strong background in materials science, applied physics, engineering, or a closely related field, with a keen interest in experimental imaging techniques. Experience with neutron and/or X-ray imaging and diffraction, as well as programming skills, are advantageous. Proficiency in English at the B2 level is required, with proof needed unless the applicant is from a native-English-speaking country or holds a degree conducted in English. The position is open to candidates who comply with the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions mobility rule and who do not already hold or are working towards a doctoral degree. The successful candidate will benefit from a varied pedagogical training programme and will have opportunities for additional visits to the University of Manchester as needed.
