PhD student in the Opus 29 project: Non-contact laser-based system for fatigue damage monitoring

PhD opportunity in the Institute of Fluid Flow Machinery, Polish Academy of Sciences, in Gdansk, Poland, within the Opus 29 project no. 2025/57/B/ST8/00045: “Non-contact laser-based system for fatigue damage monitoring” , funded by the National Science Centre, Poland. The project focuses on the design, development, and analysis of a complete non-contact laser ultrasonic system for narrowband selective Lamb wave mode generation. The research aims to improve non-destructive evaluation of structures by enabling flexible selective mode generation without coupling gel or conventional point-wise pulsed laser excitation. A particular research emphasis is on wavefield imaging based on nonlinear guided waves combined with laser patterns such as Archimedean spirals or concentric rings, with the goal of detecting and identifying damage earlier than with conventional linear guided-wave approaches. The PhD student will work on analysis of nonlinear Lamb waves induced by damage, development of full wavefield imaging methods for damage detection, including machine learning-based approaches, frequency-mixing analysis, and signal processing. The role also includes assisting with experimental setup and measurements, and preparing journal papers. This is a full-time, temporary position for 48 months, with an expected start date of 2 November 2026. The position is suitable for an MSc graduate interested in opening a doctoral dissertation and working in an energetic, curiosity-driven, culturally diverse team in the Mechanics of Intelligent Structures Department (MISD). Eligibility highlights include an MSc or equivalent in mechanics, mathematics, physics, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field, plus English proficiency at B2 level or higher. Strong skills in signal processing, programming, and MATLAB are particularly valued, and prior experience in guided wave propagation, machine learning, or related areas will be an advantage. The selection process also considers the candidate’s scientific track record and any prizes or distinctions. Applications are due by 24 October 2026 at 11:00 CET, and shortlisted candidates will be interviewed online. To apply, email your CV, transcripts, diploma copy, publication list if available, and supporting documents to Pawel Kudela at [email protected] with the subject “Laser project PhD candidate”.
