PhD Positions in Law – Open Call at Copenhagen Business School
Copenhagen Business School (CBS) is inviting applications for two fully funded PhD positions in law, anchored in the CBS LAW unit within the Department of Business Humanities and Law (BHL). The expected start date is 1 October 2026. CBS LAW’s research focuses on business law from societal and commercial perspectives, with particular emphasis on the interplay between international law, EU law, and national law. The department’s research themes include entrepreneurship, business ethics, leadership, governance, culture, learning, business history, and law, aiming to address major questions shaping business and society.
PhD candidates will join a vibrant academic environment, conducting research under the supervision of CBS’s associate professors and professors. The programme is highly international, encouraging participation in research conferences and a period as a visiting PhD student at another institution. Teaching responsibilities are included, with 416 work hours over three years, and the ability to teach in Danish is considered an advantage due to the language of most law courses.
Applicants are expected to submit a research proposal identifying a topic and research questions relevant to CBS LAW’s profile. Suggested topics include settlement of commercial disputes (litigation, arbitration, mediation), legal implications of VAT and tax law, supply chain liability and business resilience, contracting under uncertainty and systemic risk, and legal developments in EU law. Applications addressing other topics within CBS LAW’s scope are also welcome.
To be eligible, candidates must have a master’s level education (3+2 Bologna process), a grade of 10 (or equivalent) for the master’s thesis, and a weighted GPA of at least 8.2 (bachelor’s and master’s combined) or 9.5 (master’s alone) on the Danish 7-point scale. If GPA requirements are not met, documentation for being in the top 40% of the class is accepted. In rare cases, the grade requirement can be waived. Relevant educational backgrounds include law, commercial law, or auditing. Completion of the master’s programme before starting the PhD is mandatory, and high proficiency in academic English is required.
The PhD positions are fully salaried according to the Danish collective agreement, with a monthly salary ranging from DKK 29,691.75 to DKK 36,180 depending on seniority, plus a pension contribution of 18.07%. The scholarship covers tuition fees, office space, course and travel costs. CBS is committed to diversity and inclusion, encouraging applications from all backgrounds.
Applications must be submitted online by 15 July 2026. Required documents include a five-page project description, cover letter, diplomas, grade transcripts, documentation for top 40% (if needed), CV, list of publications (if applicable), and a selected written work (e.g., master’s thesis).
