Doctoral Researcher in Energy System Studies (2 positions)

The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary and international research university in Finland, is offering two fully funded doctoral researcher positions in energy system studies. These positions are part of the DSOFlex project, which is funded by the Research Council of Finland and focuses on the challenges of decarbonization from both environmental and business perspectives. The roles are based at the Martti Ahtisaari Institute (MAI) within the Oulu Business School (OBS) and the Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering Research Unit (WE3) at the Faculty of Technology (TTK). As a doctoral researcher, you will conduct scientific research and pursue postgraduate studies to achieve a doctoral degree. You will also participate in teaching and supervision activities at the MSc level. The DSOFlex project investigates the critical role of Distribution System Operators (DSOs) in enabling a sustainable, flexible, and inclusive energy transition. DSOs are increasingly required to manage local grid constraints while supporting system-wide decarbonization. The project aims to explore how DSOs can facilitate flexibility services and contribute to the creation of a carbon handprint, collaborating with VTT and University of Oulu research units. Position 1 (Business model framework) involves developing a holistic platform-based business model framework to analyze DSOs' flexibility services and carbon handprint. This position is based at the Martti Ahtisaari Institute, which specializes in business research in the context of future technologies. Position 2 (Carbon handprint) focuses on defining and quantifying the positive environmental impact of DSOs' operations and services, particularly through DSO-facilitated integration of variable renewable energy sources (VRES), storage solutions, and demand-side management. Machine learning and optimization techniques will be applied to enhance DSM and improve prediction accuracy for VRES and the carbon intensity of electricity. This position is based at the Energy and Environmental Engineering Research Group, which supports the transition to sustainable and carbon-neutral energy systems. The University of Oulu offers a supportive research environment with over 100 researchers in the OBS and WE3 units. Staff benefits include wellness support (ePassi), career development opportunities, flexible work arrangements, and programs to help new staff and their families settle in Oulu. The university holds the HR Excellence in Research label from the European Commission, recognizing its commitment to researchers’ working conditions and careers. Finland is renowned for its high quality of life, safety, excellent education system, and competitive economy. Applicants must have a completed Master's degree in a relevant field before starting (business/management, environmental studies, engineering, energy or environmental engineering). For Position 2, at least 30 ECTS in relevant subjects (energy, environment, sustainability) is required, along with good IT skills and understanding of power systems. All applicants must submit an initial research plan, demonstrate ability and motivation for doctoral studies, and be fluent in written and spoken English. Application for the right to study for a doctoral degree at University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS) is required at the start of employment. Experience in business models, digital platforms, sustainability, demand side management, energy system modelling, or carbon footprint/handprint is appreciated. Applicants should provide a motivation letter, CV (with publications), initial research plan, and contact information for two referees. Academic performance during master's studies (e.g. GPA) should be indicated. The positions are fixed-term for three years, starting from 17 August 2026 (or as agreed). The starting gross salary is approximately 2500-2800 € per month (before taxes), based on Finnish university salary levels plus a personal performance component. A six-month trial period applies. The application deadline is 30 June 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview and asked to submit diplomas and references. The University of Oulu welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and encourages diversity. For further information, contact Prof. Petri Ahokangas (Martti Ahtisaari Institute, [email protected]) or Prof. Eva Pongrácz (Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering, [email protected]). Apply online through the University of Oulu recruitment system.
