PhD student in Computer and Systems Sciences, with focus on Internet of Things and Machine Learning
Stockholm University’s Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV) is offering a PhD position focused on Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning, with an emphasis on resource-efficient on-device AI/ML for intelligent IoT systems.
The project explores multimodal machine learning models that combine sensor time series, images, audio, video, and text to enable real-time, context-aware decision-making on constrained devices. Research topics include multimodal data fusion, compact vision-language and time-series models, quantization, model compression, hardware-aware optimization, adaptive inference, subgroup identification, subgroup fairness, and group-level counterfactual methods for identifying and mitigating bias across users, devices, environments, and operating conditions. Cloud-edge processing and intelligent data-exchange mechanisms may also be studied when fully local execution is not feasible.
Potential application areas include smart buildings, industrial systems, wearable-data analysis, environmental monitoring, and decision-support systems for assisted and autonomous driving. The position is embedded in a vibrant, international academic environment with opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, seminars, and scientific exchange across academia and industry.
The Department of Computer and Systems Sciences is based at Stockholm University’s campus in Kista, north of central Stockholm, and offers a strong research and educational setting with many doctoral students and active collaborations.

Eligibility requires a second-cycle degree, or the equivalent of at least 240 higher education credits including 60 second-cycle credits, plus specific entry requirements in Computer and Systems Sciences: at least 60 second-cycle credits in the subject and a thesis/degree project of at least 15 higher education credits. English proficiency equivalent to CEFR B2 is required. Selection is based on academic preparedness, research ability, scientific maturity, communication and collaboration skills, and related subject knowledge.
