Post-Doctoral Research Grant in Imagination and Society at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon

The Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS-ULisboa) is inviting applications for one Post-Doctoral Research Grant under the ERA Chair “Establishing a Chair for the Study of Imagination and Society at the Instituto de Ciências Sociais, ULisboa” (IMAGINE, Grant Agreement ID 101187661). The grant is coordinated by ICS-ULisboa and funded by the European Research Executive Agency through Horizon Europe. The successful candidate will work under the scientific supervision of Professor Ramon Sarró, ERA Chair Holder, and contribute to a collaborative research agenda focused on the anti-colonial territorial imagination of Kongo culture in Northern Angola. The work plan includes developing an archive on anti-colonial movements in Northern Angola, conducting archival research in Portugal and Angola, undertaking four months of fieldwork in the Angolan provinces of Zaire and Uíge, and co-authoring scientific publications. This opportunity is tailored to a highly qualified postdoctoral researcher in History with strong expertise in anti-colonial imaginaries in Lusophone Africa. Applicants must hold a PhD in History awarded less than three years ago, have demonstrated experience in the field, know Angolan anti-colonial movements, and be proficient in Lingala and Kikongo. Experience in oral history methodologies and colonial archives is mandatory, along with availability for extended fieldwork in Angola alongside Professor Sarró. The grant lasts 12 months and may be renewed within the limits of the University of Lisbon Research Grant Regulations. The monthly maintenance allowance is €1,901.00 during periods in Portugal and €2,712.03 during periods in Angola. Social security coverage may be accessed through voluntary social insurance, with ICS-ULisboa covering the corresponding contributions. Applications are open from 12 October 2026 to 23 October 2026, and must be submitted by email to [email protected] with the subject line “Research Grant Competition No. 11/2026”. Required documents include the personal data form, updated CV, motivation letter, proof of eligibility, and, where relevant, proof of recognition/equivalence/registration of a foreign doctoral degree. Results will be communicated by email and/or post, and applicants may request committee minutes and exercise prior hearing rights within ten working days of notification. This post is based at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon in Lisbon, Portugal. It is an excellent opportunity for a postdoctoral scholar interested in historical research, anti-colonial studies, archival work, oral history, and collaborative publication within an internationally funded research chair.
