Postdoctoral Position in Virus-Initiated Membrane Remodelling

Postdoctoral position in virus-initiated membrane remodelling at Umeå University, Sweden. The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), hosted at Umeå University, is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join the lab of Richard Lundmark , Team Leader, on a project focused on the mechanistic understanding of how viruses create small membrane-enclosed spaces in host cells to replicate their genome. The project is centered on virus replication organelles and the role of specific lipid species and membrane properties in their formation. The work is highly interdisciplinary and sits at the intersection of virology , cell biology , biochemistry , structural biology , imaging , and membrane remodelling . The successful candidate will work in a scientific environment with access to several research groups and to major Umeå University facilities, including the Umeå Centre for Electron Microscopy and the Biochemical Imaging Centre Umeå. Research responsibilities include culturing and analysing mammalian cell models for infection, designing infection models for flaviviruses and alphaviruses, generating and analysing reconstituted membrane model systems, lipid and protein biochemistry, advanced live-cell fluorescence microscopy (including TIRF and SIM), image-analysis workflow development, and correlative light and electron microscopy. Eligibility: applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in cell biology or virology by the appointment decision date. Strong practical experience in real-time fluorescence microscopy, quantitative image analysis, cloning, protein and lipid biochemistry, and virus work is required. Good written and spoken English is mandatory, and candidates must be able to work independently and produce scientific writing. Preference is given to applicants who completed their doctorate within the last three years, although special reasons may allow later completion dates. Additional advantages: background in lipid membranes, membrane-associated proteins, membrane remodelling processes, and electron microscopy. Employment and funding: the position is full-time and fixed-term for two years. The posting describes the salary as competitive; no stipend amount is specified. Application deadline: 1 August 2026. How to apply: submit a brief description of your research interests and motivation, CV, list of publications, doctoral degree certificate and other relevant degrees, and contact details for two referees. Applications must be written in English and submitted via Umeå University's Varbi e-recruitment system.
