PhD in AI-Enabled Building Permit Assessment

PhD opportunity at The University of Melbourne in AI-enabled building permit assessment . The project, led through the Centre for Spatial Data Infrastructures and Land Administration (CSDILA) and its Digital Lab , is part of an ARC-Discovery collaboration with the Urban Digital Twin Lab at SMST-UCF, University of Central Florida , and the University of Auckland . The research focuses on transforming building permit assessment by integrating Artificial Intelligence into regulatory compliance workflows. The project will investigate Large Language Models (LLMs) , Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) , and Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) to support complex regulatory reasoning and compliance assessment across regulations, drawings, models, reports, and other application documents. The work sits at the intersection of computer science , building regulation , spatial information , BIM , and the construction industry . Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a master’s degree in computer science, geomatics, or a related discipline . Strong experience in developing or applying LLMs is essential, and experience with building regulations , BIM , digital construction , or the construction industry is highly regarded. Funding: the position includes a 3.5-year PhD scholarship covering tuition fees and providing a living allowance .
