NCCR Genesis
, a SNSF-funded interdisciplinary research infrastructure dedicated to understanding how life emerges in the Universe. The work connects chemistry, biology, physics, and earth and planetary sciences to address fundamental questions about prebiotic conditions, biosignatures, and the pathways that may lead from simple building blocks to self-replicating chemical systems.
The doctoral researcher will join the
Riek Group
at ETH Zurich, within the Institute of Molecular Physical Science, Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences (D-CHAB). The project will investigate the emergence of molecular complexity from amino acids and nucleotides, with a specific focus on peptide amyloids and their interactions with RNA and membranes, and on how these interactions may illuminate the emergence of proto-ribosomal machinery.
This is a
fully funded PhD position
for around four years at a world-leading university. The position is especially relevant for candidates interested in experimental chemistry, physical chemistry, organic chemistry, and origin-of-life research.
Applicants should have a Master's degree and a strong experimental chemistry background, ideally with experience in physical and/or organic chemistry. Strong English communication skills are essential, along with teamwork, social skills, and a proactive, positive attitude toward interdisciplinary research.
