PhD in Scientific Machine Learning for Quantum Many-Body Dynamics and Quantum Chaos
PhD opportunity at the University of Warwick
in the Department of Physics, working on
Scientific Machine Learning for Quantum Many-Body Dynamics and Quantum Chaos
.
This project sits at the interface of
quantum physics
,
theoretical physics
,
statistical mechanics
,
machine learning
, and
high-performance computing
. The research aims to develop new computational approaches for simulating and analysing complex quantum systems, where conventional methods struggle because of exponential complexity.
Possible directions include machine-learning methods for sign and phase problems in quantum simulations, studying quantum chaos and thermalisation, identifying phase transitions and critical phenomena from data, extracting observables from noisy quantum computing/simulation experiments, and building interpretable, uncertainty-aware ML tools for physical insight.
The successful candidate will join the Theoretical Physics research activities in the Department of Physics at Warwick and work under the co-supervision of
Professor Rudolf Roemer
and
Dr Amos Chan
. The project offers interdisciplinary training in quantum many-body theory, computational physics, scientific machine learning, numerical methods, and research software development, with opportunities for collaboration within Warwick’s quantum science community and beyond.
Funding:
fully funded for 42 months, with a UK-standard annual tax-free stipend of
£21,830
rising with inflation, plus conference travel and consumables. Some UKRI awards are available for international students, and Warwick PGR Scholarship Competitions may provide additional international funding support.
Eligibility:
applicants should have or expect at least an upper second class BSc honours, MSci or MPhys, or equivalent in Physics or a related subject. A strong mathematical and analytical background is required; programming experience in Python, C/C++, Julia, Mathematica, or similar is desirable. Non-native English speakers need IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
How to apply:
review the Department of Physics postgraduate application information on Warwick’s website. Interested applicants are encouraged to email Professor Roemer with a brief CV and a short statement of interests and relevant background before applying.
Location:
Coventry, United Kingdom.
