Doctoral Studentship Employment in Textile Management (TexAI Project)
The University of Borås is recruiting a doctoral student for a four-year studentship in Textile Management, as part of the TexAI research profile—Knowledge in AI-driven innovation for circular ecosystems in the textile and fashion industry. This interdisciplinary initiative, funded by the Knowledge Foundation, brings together expertise from Textiles & Fashion and Business & IT to advance AI-driven solutions for a sustainable and circular textile sector.
The doctoral student will join the Textile Systems and Computational Intelligence (TSCI) and Textile Value Chain Management (TVCM) research groups. TSCI applies systems-oriented perspectives and computational intelligence to analyze production units, technologies, and organizational structures in manufacturing and supply chain environments, aiming to enhance system performance, agility, and sustainability. TVCM focuses on developing industry structures and business models that enable sustainable value creation for the textile and fashion industry, the environment, and society.
Research tasks include investigating data requirements, standardization, and integration in textile value chains to enable AI-based applications. The student will use methods from operations research, data analytics, and machine learning to identify and prioritize data criteria and sources, develop frameworks for standardized data collection and sharing, and analyze how value chain data supports sustainability and circularity decision-making. Collaboration with global industry stakeholders for data collection and validation is expected, along with empirical data analysis, scientific publication, and tailored research communication.
Applicants must meet the general entry requirements for doctoral studies: a Master’s degree or equivalent, or at least 240 credits (with 60 at the Master’s level). Special qualifications include a Master’s in textile management, industrial economics, or equivalent. Required skills are experience with supply chain data, knowledge of the textile industry, strong interpersonal and initiative-taking abilities, structured work habits, and proficiency in English. Merits include research experience in supply chain management (especially textiles/fashion), basic textile materials/processes knowledge, programming skills, practical industry experience with sustainability and automation, scientific publication experience, and research communication.
The studentship is full-time for four years, with salary and benefits according to university agreements. The University of Borås offers generous holiday leave, occupational pension, and values diversity and gender balance among employees. The start date is 1 May 2026 or as agreed.
