PhD position in the area of Investigation of the structure-property connection of chiral Au nanoparticles by advanced transmission electron microscopy

The EMAT research group at the Faculty of Science, University of Antwerp, is offering a PhD position on the investigation of the structure-property connection of chiral Au nanoparticles using advanced transmission electron microscopy. The project is embedded in the ERC Synergy Grant Handshake Complexes of Chiral Nanoparticles and Proteins (CHIRAL-PRO), in collaboration with researchers at CIC Biomagune, the University of Vigo, and the University of Michigan. The successful candidate will study chiral nanoparticles and their interaction with light at the single-particle level using TEM-based techniques such as EELS and cathodoluminescence (CL). A newly installed TEM instrument enables light injection and collection, supporting the development of new approaches to probe chiroptical response under controlled and liquid conditions. The project also includes 3D characterization of nanoparticle structure through electron tomography and/or SEEBIC, with the goal of linking local structure to optical response and growth behavior. This is a strong opportunity for candidates interested in nanotechnology, materials physics, spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. The work takes place in a world-class research environment with state-of-the-art instrumentation and computing facilities at the University of Antwerp’s Campus Drie Eiken. The project is highly collaborative and includes publication of scientific articles and presentation at workshops and conferences. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in physics, chemistry, or materials science. Hands-on TEM experience is an advantage, and the university is looking for motivated, creative, quality-oriented, cooperative candidates with strong academic results. The position is offered as a doctoral scholarship for one year, renewable after positive evaluation. The monthly scholarship follows the standard doctoral scholarship holder rates and includes additional benefits such as ecocheques, internet connectivity allowance, and commuting support. The preferred starting date is 1 November 2026, subject to the selected candidate’s availability.
