PhD and Postdoctoral Positions in AI for Advanced Materials and Engineering Design

The AMED Lab (AI for Advanced Materials & Engineering Design) at the Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence (AI4I) is seeking motivated researchers for PhD and postdoctoral positions. The lab, led by Principal Investigator Marco Maurizi, focuses on developing next-generation AI methodologies grounded in physics and manufacturing constraints to revolutionize the design of architected materials and engineering systems. Research areas include generative AI for architected materials, AI-enhanced surrogate modeling, and dynamically programmable metamaterials. The lab's work bridges machine learning with domain knowledge to create scalable, automated design pipelines for industrial deployment, impacting sectors such as aerospace, automotive, biomedical, manufacturing, robotics, defense, and consumer electronics. Current opportunities include two PhD positions offered in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano, with co-supervision by Prof. Serena Graziosi, and two postdoctoral researcher positions. The lab values strong curiosity, initiative, and enthusiasm for advancing AI-native science and engineering. Applicants should have a background in artificial intelligence, physics, materials science, engineering, or related fields. For PhD positions, a relevant master's degree is typically required; for postdoctoral roles, a PhD in a related discipline is expected. To apply, candidates should email their CV and a brief statement of research interests, motivation, and fit to [email protected]. The lab welcomes spontaneous applications and encourages those interested in high-impact, interdisciplinary research at the intersection of AI, physics, and materials to connect. For more information, visit the lab's website or the LinkedIn announcement.

Postdoctoral Fellowships in AI, Physics, Materials, Robotics and Engineering at AI4I AMED Lab

AI4I’s Advanced Materials & Engineering Design (AMED) Lab in Turin, Italy is inviting applications for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships with the lab as host institution. The opportunity is aimed at experienced researchers with a PhD who want to develop an independent postdoctoral project in a highly interdisciplinary environment. The lab welcomes project ideas at the intersection of artificial intelligence, physics, materials science, robotics, and engineering , with particular interest in: • physics-aware AI engines for simulation, design, and discovery • scientific machine learning, neural operators, and graph-based modeling • physics-informed generative models and inverse design • robotic matter, active architected materials, and adaptive material systems The host institution is the Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence (AI4I) , and the lab is the AMED Lab . The post is led by Marco Maurizi , Principal Investigator. The post also references a related opportunity through Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo for MSCA Seal of Excellence projects, with AI4I reserved as host institution for two positions. Funding under MSCA PF includes a living allowance, mobility allowance if applicable, family allowance if applicable, long-term leave and special needs allowances, plus support for research, training, networking, management, and indirect costs. The CSP route is an additional host-based opportunity for Seal of Excellence projects in artificial intelligence. Eligibility highlights : applicants must hold a PhD by the deadline, meet MSCA mobility and research-experience rules, and prepare the application jointly with the host organisation. The post asks interested candidates to send a CV, a short research idea, and a brief statement of fit with the AMED Lab. Deadlines : MSCA PF deadline is 9 September 2026 . The first CSP deadline is 3 June 2026 . Useful links in the post include the AMED Lab page, the MSCA PF call page, and the CSP call page. Interested candidates should contact the lab early at [email protected] .
